In view of the war in Ukraine, the progressive world umbrella organization WUPJ (www.wupj.org) set up a crisis fund with a worldwide appeal for donations to support the Jewish community in Ukraine. The PLJS (Platform of Liberal Jews of Switzerland) recommends this appeal to its members.
‘Ukraine Emergency Support’ is working with key global organizations such as the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the World Zionist Organization (WZO) to ensure successful coordination and avoid duplication of efforts.
The three PLJS member communities GIL (Communauté Juive Libérale de Genève), Migwan (Liberale Jüdische Gemeinde Basel) and JLG (Jüdische Liberale Gemeinde Zürich) are also involved in a variety of ways in coordination with Jewish communities and other partner organizations. For example, guest accommodations are available from members of the Liberal Jewish Community of Basel, Migwan.
Our overall effort is to ensure the safety of the Ukrainian community, which is being supported with food, shelter, medical care and psychological support, while at the same time a refugee center has been established in Poland to house families who have fled Ukraine.
While we all continue to pray and work for peace, we also recognize the importance of supporting our communities.
